Ship's maker's plate

The S.S. Orvieto's brass maker's plate was acquired by www.auburnantiques.com in Armadale, Victoria, Australia and sold on eBay in November 2006. This photograph was brought to my attention by Peter Markham, a partner in Auburn Antiques, and taken from the eBay seller's page.

The sellers' information states that the plate was most likely removed from the vessel by an Australian soldier some time around 1914 when it was used as an Australian troopship. However the ship made many visits to Australia in peace-time and so there could well be some other explanation for the removal of the plate.
